Su -

I'm thinking that I want me some big, honkin' Boeing landing light bulbs - the kind that you turn on once, briefly, and the room then stays brightly lit forever, from all the photons bouncing around.

I'm not a green guy. I have what I consider to be real respect for the environment - I believe that the environment can change and adapt to anything that I throw at it. I just don't think that we humans could do ANYTHING that would do lasting harm to the ecosystem - pollution, nuclear war, landfills full of Pampers, are all just hiccups to Gaia.
Phil -

Thanks!

First off - it makes no difference. Regardless of WHEN I do it, I have to turn on the light in order to pack the gym bag, because all of that stuff is in the bedroom - and we keep the shutters pulled over the bedroom windows, for insulation (more of that "saving electricity" thingy).

Second - I usually do that. But here at the Condo, I suffer from hypoxia, and can't remember anything. What were we talking about?
Jim,

You could always just pack your gym bag the evening before and leave it near the door you exit on route to the gym.

Phil

Jim,
We had cfc bulbs just as you described. There are newer generation cfc bulbs that come on or "light" as you turn them on now. So you can still be all green and use less electricity, but not be stymied by standing in the dark waiting for the lights to be "on."

We have "older" cfc spotlights over our kitchen island. In the morning, when you are not awake trying to get some coffee, it's not a bad thing that they slowly light. At night (when you trip over the Transformer your 3 yr old grandson left on the floor) it is not good at all.

Let there be light...and there was sooner or later ;)

Su

Thank you, Chris. I agree with you completely.

I am a fundamentalist. I sit on my fundament, and make mental lists of things that aren't in the Big Book.

I'm glad we had this little talk : )
I think someone who is focused on the content of the text at hand would be known as a "fundamentalist".

That is not the same as being a conservative. A conservative doesn't want things to change. A fundamentalist wants everything not meeting the standard to change to match the standard.

My opinion would be that since your viewpoint is based on a literal reading of the original founding document, that would be put you in the more conservative corner. :-)

As to the relevance of the dinosaur, by interesting coincidence, one of the speakers at the Q&A session at the end of Harlan's presentation (at our Convention last weekend), stated that your presentation last year had revolutionized her program. It seems that she was not entirely alone in that assessment either - I am still hearing references around town to your presentation last year (yes - all positive).

I suspect Harlan's presentation will also prove to have lasting effect. And the trip back to the airport was certainly an interesting adventure.

Alan

When does one become a dinosaur? Is that before or after you become a bleeding deacon?
This discussion of conservatism sounds, to this left wing commie la la land liberal as a pillow fight on Fox News.
Reminds me of a poster I used to have, couple of buzzards sitting in a tree on the hill above your house. One says to the other, "Patience, my ass, I'm gonna kill something."

I'm not sure that flashing your lights is a universally accepted signal of ones intention to pass. In fact, I think a case could be made that flashing lights might be interpreted as "you freaking donkey" (or something similar). At least, that's how I would probably perceive it.

That being said, I'm having a difficult time coming up with an example of an argument that I have had that is doesn't fit your suggested cause.
