Almost There
It's six days until football season starts, and eight days until the first Alabama game.

...I've been watching my Mr. Giddy's Countdown to Kickoff Calendar all year long. We're almost there.
It doesn't feel like football here in the Valley of the Sun - yesterday it was 113 F, and the forecast for today is even hotter than that. There are none of the seasonal indicators of autumn - well, the leaves are falling off the trees, but that's because the trees are all DYING in this *&^%$# heat.
Ethel mentioned the other day that she's ready to cook up a bowl of chili and turn on the fireplace. She has no idea what the actual temperature is, of course - menopause will do that to you.
#5 Alabama (I don't know why they are ranked #5 - they lost the last two games of the season, and our quarterback has never played a game) opens the season against #7 Virginia Tech (I don't know why they are ranked #7, either) at the Georgia Dome, starting out the season playing a ranked ACC team once again. It won't go like it went last year.
But even though it won't be at all cool weather, and even though we won't go undefeated thhrough the regular season again, it'll still be football season....the only downside being that it's another football season; the other one was over just the other day, and they keep going by faster as I have fewer and fewer of them left.
Roll Tide!

As a lifelong Husker fan I'm right there with you on the annual countdown. But this year has an added sense of excitement and heightened expectation. Logan, my 7th-grade son, has joined 32 other 7th and 8th graders on the practice field to become -- in 2012 -- what will be the first varsity team for this town in 50 years. That long road back begins in two weeks against Bells, TX, middle-school.

Next September, Penn State travels to Alabama and the next year, Alabama goes to Penn State. A local doc is a 'bama grad and I'm taking him to a Penn State game this year. We are talking about making the trip to see the game at Alabama next year.
