It's a great place to be a rattlesnake
I got this photo (among others) in an email from a friend down in Tucson:
He said that it was a rattlesnake den near Oracle, AZ - which is just outside of Tucson.
I mentioned it to some friends this weekend while hiking - one of them had received this same picture in three different emails - one attributing it to someplace in Montana, another saying that it was in Colorado, and a third saying that it was somewhere ELSE in Arizona.
The flora doesn't give any real indication (although it doesn't look to me like the Oracle area - that's still in the Sonoran Desert). It does look to me like somewhere that I wouldn't want to be. Rattlesnakes give me the heebiemajeebies - at least, rattlesnakes en masse.
I don't dislike them - in fact, when I run across one in the desert, I often stop to spend some time observing them observing me. And we have nice long talks, wherein I explain that God gave me dominion over rattlesnakes, because I have opposable thumbs...As long as I can see and hear the rattlesnake, it's just fine with me.
But the idea of having this much biomass of rattlers underfoot - just having rattlesnakes piled on top of each other - gives me the willies.
And I'm surprised to see them cuddling up together like this - I don't tend to think of rattlesnakes as being quite this sociable. But, come to think of it - if you're a rattlesnake, and you want to cuddle, who else will cuddle with you but another rattlesnake?
When running in the desert, we follow rattlesnake protocols - that means at least ten yards between the FIRST guy running and the SECOND guy running. If we don't do this, then the first guy to pass gets the snake mad, and then he jumps at the next guy - but if you give the snake some time, then he'll coil up and RATTLE, and the second guy in line can avoid him.
Rattlesnakes and scorpions - the two sourges of living in the Sonoran desert. I used to think of "tarantulas" in the same context, until I ran across some tarantulas one day and found out that they aren't dangerous and aren't even scary - in fact, they're kind of cute. And they don't move very fast.
Rattlesnakes are NOT cute (no matter how cuddly they may be) and they DO move really fast - at least, once it gets warmed up (currently we're in that weather pattern where one day the high is 112 F, the next it's 111 - not a lot of variety. But it's great, if you're a cold-blooded reptile who warms by solar loading).
This is the time of the year when a fellow like me wonders if he really should be living in Arizona. (Heck - this is the time of year when the Governor probably starts wondering if she lives in the right state - wait, is our governor still a woman? Lemme go check.....yep. It's still her). Summers in Arizona just don't make sense - like Midwestern winters; it leaves you wondering "what was God thinking?"
I suspect that Barry Goldwater might have decided to run for President once he realized that it meant he'd spend the summer elsewhere, campaigning.
If you have a moment, check out my livejournal for the last week. Last wednesday night I stepped on a bark scorpion (after seeing them around the house, outside, for a few days previously), and then I stumbled upon the largest diamonback I've ever seen. It was coiled right next to the garden hose. Fun times in Tucson :) (I also got up close and personal w/ a javelina -fun through the glass door, not so much in the open air). I have a major snake phobia. The stories Ethel used to tell about Silas' snake that disappeared in Park City totally freaked me out. I would imagine crawling into bed and finding it. Yikes! Just looking at that picture made my heart race and my palms sweat. No more snake pictures on Fat Charlie please.
